If you want fast results in your urban garden, start with lettuce: it grows in weeks, takes little space and, with "leaf" varieties, you can pick individual leaves for weeks without pulling the plant. It's almost impossible to fail.

Varieties for pots

  • Leaf (oak leaf, lollo, batavia): the best for pots. Pick outer leaves and they keep growing (cut-and-come-again).
  • Heading (butterhead/iceberg): form a head; they need more room and are harvested whole.
  • Mix them with arugula, lamb's lettuce or baby spinach for a "salad bowl."

Pot and soil

  • Lettuce has shallow roots: just 6 inches deep is enough. Long planters and crates are ideal.
  • Rich soil with compost and good drainage. Leave 6-8 inches between plants (or sow densely for "baby leaf").

Light and temperature

  • It wants soft sun or part shade: 4-6 hours. It tolerates less sun than fruiting plants.
  • It's a cool-season crop (spring and fall). In hot weather it bolts (goes to flower) and turns bitter; in summer, give it partial shade.

Watering

Lettuce is mostly water, so it wants steady moisture:

  • Water often so the soil doesn't dry out; in heat, daily.
  • Water the base, ideally in the morning. Lack of water makes it bitter and bolt sooner.

The cut-and-come-again trick

With leaf types, don't pull the plant: cut the outer leaves, leaving the center (the heart) intact. New leaves regrow within days. A single plant gives you several "harvests."

Common problems

  • Bolting (going to flower): heat or lack of water. Harvest earlier and give shade.
  • Slugs and snails: if growing outdoors, check at night.
  • Aphids: wash off with a jet of water or insecticidal soap.

Sow every 2-3 weeks for a staggered supply of fresh lettuce year-round. Lettuce looking off? Try the AI diagnosis.
